Art Space Hohwa

아트스페이스 호화는 7월 8일부터 8월 14일까지 두 번째 소장품전 《Act 2. Kairos Time》을 개최한다. 본 전시는 호반문화재단의 다양한 컬렉션을 선보이는 전시로, 자연과 도시, 인간과 동물 등 실존하는 대상 및 풍경을 탈맥락화하고 재맥락화한 회화, 조각, 사진들로 구성되어 있다. 본 전시에서는 Andy Denzler, Brad Howe, George Condo, Jordi Pinto, Mat Collishaw, Michael Wesely, Sally West, Zhuang Hong-Yi, 강준영, 김덕용, 노현우, 도성욱, 송지연, 안소현, 유영희, 정영주, 채성필, 황용엽 등 총 18인의 작품 20점을 만나볼 수 있다.

이번 전시에서는 2000년대 이후 포스트모더니즘 회화와 조각들이 주로 소개되며, ‘자연 이미지’를 창조적으로 변주한 작품들을 중심으로 한다. 채성필의 <원시향>은 흙물을 직접 캔버스 위에 사용해 지구 생명의 근원적 에너지를 추상표현주의로 소화해내며, 브래드 하우(Brad Howe)의 <Viata>는 자연에서 받은 영감을 얇은 와이어와 알루미늄 컬러칩이 결합된 조각으로 치환해냈다. 자연 이미지가 도시 속 물질과 함께 배치돼 서로 충돌을 일으키는 작품도 있다. 맷 콜리셔(Mat Collishaw)는 그래피티 작업이 된 콘크리트 위에 시골에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 작은 새를 사실적으로 재현한 <Gasconades>를 통해 우리 시대의 물질성을 풍자한다.

또한, 미술사에서 가장 오랫동안 사용된 이미지인 ‘인간’을 표현한 작품들도 선보여진다. 고전 초상화 양식을 빌려 자기만의 독특한 언어로 재해석하는 작가인 조지 콘도(George Condo)는 <French Maid with Red Hair>에서 시시각각 변하는 인간의 내면을 담기 위해 다각도로 바라본, 분할된 인물의 모습을 조합했고, 한국 현대 미술사의 거장인 황용엽은 <인간>이라는 작품을 통해 전쟁으로 인해 개인이 입은 상처를 극복하는 과정을 보여주며, 위태롭지만 선명한 라인으로 그려낸 사람 형상과 함께 복잡한 색으로 배경을 표현했다.

고대 그리스인들은 시간을 두 가지 관점으로 나눠 해석했다. 하나는 ‘크로노스’(Kronos)로 누구에게나 동등하게 주어진 객관적이고 물리적인 시간 그 자체다. 또 다른 하나는 ‘카이로스’(Kairos)로 저마다 인식하고 있는 주관적 · 심리적 시간, 또는 비선형적 시간을 뜻한다. 정확히 말하면, 선형(linar)의 시간대에서의 어느 한 '때' 를 의미한다. 이는 우리 내부에서 발생하는 질적 시간으로서 연대기적 시간에 작은 구멍을 만들고 존재의 새로운 면모를 마주하게 하는 귀한 찰나라고도 할 수 있겠다. 모두에게 주어진 시간이 아닌 나에게만 적용되는 특별한 순간인 것이다.

이번 전시의 기획 의도는 ‘카이로스적 시간’에 대한 고찰을 바탕으로 한다. 20세기 중반 이후부터 예술가들은 존재의 이면을 드러내기 위해 특정 대상을 기존의 형태나 고정관념으로부터 끄집어낸 후 저마다의 미적 해석을 거쳐 또 다른 이미지로 재탄생시키곤 했다. 그 과정은 고전적 시간(크로노스)을 해체하고 새롭게 의미 부여된 카이로스적 시간으로 재구성하는 행위로도 해석할 수 있다. 또 작품 감상을 통해 작가의 ‘시간 재구성’ 과정을 지켜보는 수용자들 또한 저마다의 인식과 경험을 바탕으로 카이로스적 시간을 영위하고 있는 셈이다. 아트스페이스 호화의 소장품전 《Act. 2 Kairos Time》은 포스트모더니즘 예술의 실존 대상에 대한 탈구축화를 주목하고자 하며, 작품에 내재한 고유한 미의식의 집적을 통해 관람객의 선형적 시간에 균열을 내고자 한다.

ARTSPACE HOHWA will host its second collection exhibition, 《Act 2. Kairos Time》, from July 8 to August 14. This exhibition presents various collections of the Hoban Cultural Foundation, and consists of paintings, sculptures and photographs that decontextualize and contextualize existing objects and landscapes such as nature, cities, humans and animals. In this exhibition, you can see 20 works by a total of 18 people, including Andy Denzler, Brad Howe, George Condo, Jordi Pinto, Mat Collishaw, Michael Wesely, Sally West, Zhuang Hong-Yi, Kang Junyoung, Kim Duckyong, Roh Hyeunwoo, Do Sungwook, Song Jiyeon, An Sohyun, Yoo Younghee, Joung Youngju, Chae Sungpil , Hwang Yongyop , etc.

The exhibition mainly introduces postmodernist paintings and sculptures of after the 2000s, focusing on works that creatively transform "natural images." Sung Pil Chae's “Wonsihyang” uses soil and water directly on the canvas to express the fundamental energy of Earth's life into abstract expressionism, and Brand Howe's "Viata,“ inspired by nature, replaces with a sculpture that combines thin wires and aluminum color chips. There are also works in which natural images are placed with materials in the city, causing conflicts with each other. Mat Collishaw satirizes the materials of our time through "Castanades," a realistic reproduction of common birds in the countryside on graffitied concrete.

In addition, works expressing "human", the longest used image in art history, are also presented. George Condo, an artist who borrows a classical portrait style and reinterprets it in his own unique language, combined the divided figures from various angles to capture the ever-changing human side in the “French Maid with Red Hair,” and Yong Yop Hwang, a master of Korean modern art history, expressed the background in complex colors with images of people with precarious but clear lines, showing the process of overcoming a man's trauma caused by the war through his work "Human."

The ancient Greeks interpreted time in two different perspectives. One is 'Kronos', which is an objective and physical time given equally to everyone. Another is 'Kairos', which refers to subjective and psychological time, or non-linear time, which is recognized by each person. To be precise, it means one 'point of view' in the time zone of linear. This is a qualitative time that occurs within us, and it is also a precious moment when we make a small hole in chronological time and face a new aspect of existence. It is a special moment that applies only to me, not to everyone.

The planning intention of this exhibition is based on the consideration of 'Kairos Time’'. Since the mid-20th century, artists used to pull out certain objects from existing forms or stereotypes to reveal the other side of their existence and then recreate them into another image through their own aesthetic interpretation. The process can also be interpreted as an act of dismantling classical time (Kronos) and reconstructing it into a newly meaningful Kairos Time. In addition, prisoners who watch the process of "reorganization of time" by artists through appreciation of their works are also running Kairos Time based on their own perceptions and experiences. The exhibition of ARTSPACE HOHWA's collection exhibition, 《Act. 2 Kairos Time》, aims to pay attention to the decentralization of the real object of postmodern art, and to crack visitors' linear time through the integration of the unique aesthetic consciousness inherent in the work.
